Newport District Court Lawyer

The Newport Rhode Island District Court is located at 45 Washington Square in Newport.  The District Court is housed in the Murray Judicial Complex.

Most RI litigants start their legal journey in the District Court.  There are four locations throughout the state.  One can be found in Providence, Kent, Newport, and Washington.

District Court has the power to adjudicate all non-jury criminal misdemeanor matters.  The District Court has jurisdiction over bail hearings in felony cases and misdemeanor violation hearings.

The court also has power to preside over civil case where the dollar amount in controversy is up to $5,000.  If the litigants reach a mutual agreement, the District Court can extend its jurisdiction to cases involving up to $10,000.

The surrounding neighborhood may be familiar to moviegoers.  A significant portion of the area was the backdrop for the movie Amistad. 

If you are driving to the court, it can be reached from many different ways:

• From Providence, South County, and points West of Newport - Travel on Route 1 to the Route 138 East exit toward the Jamestown and Newport bridges.  Take the Route 238 South exit towards scenic Newport.  Turn right onto Farewell Street.  At 2nd traffic light, take a right onto America’s Cup Avenue.  At 2nd traffic light, take a left onto West Marlborough Street.  Take the 1st right onto Thames Street.  At traffic light, take a left onto Touro Street.  The courthouse will be straight ahead on your left.

 

• From Mount Hope Bridge – Travel to Route 138 (approximately 8 miles).  Route 138 through Middletown becomes East Main Road.  After passing the Aquidneck Center, proceed to traffic light and turn left onto Broadway.  Travel on Broadway for 2 miles and the courthouse will be directly in front of you. 

 

• From Route 24 -  Follow Route 24 South to end.  Follow Route 114 South.  Pass Stop & Shop (on right), Navy housing (on right), and Bank of Newport (also on right).  Go through two (2) lights. After 2nd light, Newport Hospital will be on your left.  Continue straight on Broadway.  Courthouse will be in front of you.
